CEEQUAL for International Projects About CEEQUAL for International Projects has been specifically created for the assessment of civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and public realm projects outside the UK and Ireland. This form of the Scheme was launched in 2011 and is complementary to CEEQUAL for UK & Ireland Projects. There is a new Manual based on Version 5 of the CEEQUAL Methodology with the same nine section structure. Version 4 continues in use on existing Assessments applied for before Version 5 was introduced. Through the commitment of many experts working for the benefit of the industry, the Assessment Manual for International Projects is applicable anywhere in the world. Its use will reflect commitment to high environmental and social standards and will yield improvements to projects.

With CEEQUAL International, a blanket use of UK & Ireland weightings and scores would be inappropriate because of differences in physical environmental conditions and/or cultural influences. A project team using CEEQUAL International therefore needs to undertake a weighting exercise specific to the local area of the project, or work with others in the area and CEEQUAL to create a set of weightings for their specific country or region.

The Assessor also needs to take into consideration the local regulations and practice of each country. Assessors are given some flexibility to amend the wording of specified areas of the International Manual to ensure its relevance to local conditions. In addition, with CEEQUAL’s agreement, the Manual can be translated into other languages, as has been recently completed by our Swedish users.

In support of this approach, region-specific references and explanation of terms will increasingly be presented in updateable online documents on the Online Document Library for Assessors & Verifiers. This will enable Assessors to present to clients and colleagues wherever they are working a Manual relevant to their needs and ways of working, whilst maintaining the rigor of the overall CEEQUAL Scheme and comparability of results.

Types of Awards

Version 5 offers users the chance to achieve either a:

• Sustainability Strategy & Performance Assessment (completing Sections 1-9), or

• Sustainability Performance Assessment (completing Sections 2-9).

There are five types of Award available under both forms of Assessments:

• Whole Team Award (formerly Whole Project Award)  – the full CEEQUAL Award applied jointly by the client, designer and principal contractor(s)
• In addition, an Interim Design Award is available where a Client & Design Award is integrated into the process en route to a Whole Team Award.

Four part-team Awards are available for projects where not all project partners can take part or where individual members of the team would like to have their own role assessed and recognised separately:

• Client & Design Award – for a joint application by the client and designer
• Design Award – for principal designer(s) only
• Design & Construction Award – for a joint application by the contractor and their designer
• Construction Award – for principal contractor(s) only.

Example project Awards

Projects that can be assessed using CEEQUAL vary from bridges, business parks, canals, coastal defence works, dams, flood alleviation schemes, major highways, park & ride schemes, pipelines, ports, power generation projects (including wind farms and other renewables), public realm works, pumping stations, railway works including stations, reservoirs, river engineering, sports stadia and other venues, remediation works, reservoirs, roads, transmission systems, urban regeneration schemes, water treatment works, wastewater treatment works, waste transfer and recycling facilities.

Assessor Training

Prospective Assessors are welcome to attend project Assessor training courses in the UK or when arranged for else where. Courses can also be held outside the UK and Ireland upon request and when sufficient attendance can be assured. Please note: all Assessor training courses are conducted in English and require the attendees to have a competent grasp of the English language that would be sufficient for him/her to successfully complete a CEEQUAL training course and to carry out a full CEEQUAL Assessment (including all meetings with the Verifier) with English as the operational language.
