The project
Sandy Lane Relief Road (SLRR) is part of strategic new highway provision within the South West District of Northampton that opens up the area for planned housing growth. HCA’s masterplan for new housing and community facilities in the area requires SLRR to provide access from the A4500 and also to link with the adjacent planned Park & Ride site.
Continuing northwards from the award-winning Cross Valley Link Road, which opened to traffic in May 2009, the next phase of SLRR will link up with the Sandy Lane Improvement North scheme, due to start construction in late 2009 and will create a substantial new route around the south and west of Northampton.
Halcrow undertook the masterplanning, outline design and planning, detailed design, and the management and supervision of the construction contract. An NEC ECC Option C Target Cost contract was adopted in order to promote collaborative working, and this was awarded to BAM Nuttall Ltd in October 2008. The works cost £3.9M and were completed in October 2009.
