Construction Only Award

Project Team
Client: Severnside Distribution Land Ltd
Design:
Upton McGougan plc
Construction: Dyer & Butler

The Project
The works carried out at Project Blue involved the construction of a 1200m long access road and 35m diameter roundabout which will eventually service a new distribution park development. The works involved significant site clearance works, the construction of 1200m of embankment and carriageway with associated wick drainage and road drainage. In addition piling and underpinning works to 125m of high pressure oil pipeline was also carried out. The works also involved significant habitat management where species (such as bats and great crested newts) had to be managed throughout the project.

Dyer & Butler decided to implement CEEQUAL on this project in order to gain an understanding of the Award Scheme and further the development of our sustainability obligations.

Challenges

The project faced many challenges, but the biggest of these was undoubtedly the arrangements that were needed to manage the ecology that exists around the site. As the site has been undeveloped for many years, many species (such as great crested newts, bats and other reptiles and amphibians) were present on site. The surveys, management plans and control arrangements that were implemented on site were always well planned and executed.

Waste Minimisation – All site clearance arisings were baled up and sent off to be used as biomass fuel in order to offset any adverse environmental effects of the project.

Ecology Management – Extensive protection measures for great crested newts were implemented on site and the site team liaised with the Client’s ecological consultants on a regular basis to ensure all works were undertaken in accordance with current regulations and the conditions of the license issued by English Nature.

Material Usage – Alternative, recycled materials were investigated and resourced in order to reduce the use of raw materials during work to import fill to the site.
