Project summary
Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council planned to improve a 1.9 km-section of the A6182 – White Rose Way between Junction 3 of the M18 and the Lady Bank roundabout. The improvement involved the upgrading of the existing wide single carriageway to a dual-carriageway and the replacement of existing roundabouts at Potteric Carr and Lady Bank with signalised junctions.
The project included the following key elements of work:
- The introduction of a second carriageway to the west of the existing road between the M18 and the Potteric Carr roundabout and to the east of the existing road between Potteric Carr and the Lady Bank roundabout.
- The construction of a second bridge over the East Coast Main Line to accommodate the new southbound carriageway.
- The replacement of the existing Potteric Carr and Lady Bank roundabouts with signalised junctions.
- The lengthening, modification and introduction of new drains and culverts to accommodate the increased width of the new dual-carriageway.
- The creation of interceptors and four balancing features for the associated treatment and regulation of road-derived runoff prior to discharge to existing drains / watercourses.
- The introduction of footpaths and cycleways alongside White Rose Way to link into the nature reserve and a separate footpath / cycleway at the bottom of the new embankment between Woodfield Way and the former Woodfield Mineral Line.
- The upgrade of the existing road lighting to improve safety; 12 m high columns would be provided along each side of the dual carriageway and three 18 m high mini-masts at the two modified junctions.
- The establishment of new areas of planting and landscaping.
- Extensive habitat creation to mitigate ecological impacts associated with the upgrading of the existing road.
