First CEEQUAL Achievements Awards unveiled

At a ceremony held on 14 March at the ICE, eight infrastructure and civil engineering projects in the UK were presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award. This event marked the first time that CEEQUAL has chosen to highlight any specific aspect of projects which have gone through the CEEQUAL assessment process. A further three projects picked up a total of nine Highly Commended trophies.

However, in two categories covered by CEEQUAL – Energy & Carbon, and Transport – no Outstanding Achievement Awards or Commendations were made.

34 applications were shortlisted, from which a diverse group of projects were chosen by the judges for their demonstration of genuine excellence:

• The Olympic Park picked up Outstanding Achievement Awards in three different categories: project management (for the Park overall), land use (for the north and south areas’ enabling works) and landscape (for the primary foul sewer and pumping station).
• The A58 Blackbrook diversion scheme won the ecology and biodiversity category.
• Parc Cybi business park won the category for archaeology and cultural heritage.
• The Harefield to Southall gas pipeline project won the waste management category.
• Moneymore flood alleviation scheme won the Outstanding Achievement Award for the category which looks at effects on neighbours.
• The Castleford footbridge won the category for community relations.

Highly Commended certificates also went to:

• Cross Valley Link Road (project management)
• Park for Truro (landscape, and ecology and biodiversity)
• the Olympic Park enabling works (ecology and biodiversity, and archaeology and cultural heritage)
• Parc Cybi (water issues, and material use)
• Granville Industrial Estate (material use)
• Moneymore flood alleviation scheme (community relations).

The Awards were judged by Professor Paul Jowitt (former president of the ICE), Rosemary Beales (CEO of CECA), Professor Peter Guthrie (University of Cambridge), Anthony Oliver (Editor of New Civil Engineer), Nelson Ogunshakin (CEO of ACE) and Andrew Swain (CEEQUAL Director and Chair of the CEEQUAL Technical Advisory Group).
