Awards

CEEQUAL Awards are given to projects and contracts that have been assessed against detailed and specific environmental and social criteria (CEEQUAL Methodology) by a CEEQUAL-trained Assessor and verified by a CEEQUAL-appointed Verifier.

The Award certificate is officially presented to recipients by a CEEQUAL representative in one of many ways; at a CEEQUAL event, at an Institution of Civil Engineers regional or annual event, on site, or at any internal project company event. Melanie Manton ([email protected]) will email the Assessor a draft version of the Award to finalise the certificate before framing for presentation.

Award types

There are five types of Award available under CEEQUAL for UK & Ireland Projects and CEEQUAL for International Projects:

Version 5 offers users the chance to achieve either a:

  • Sustainability Strategy & Performance Assessment (completing Sections 1-9), or
  • Sustainability Performance Assessment (completing Sections 2-9).

There are five types of Award available under both forms of Assessments:

  • Whole Team Award (formerly Whole Project Award )– the full CEEQUAL Award applied jointly by the client, designer and principal contractor(s)
  • In addition, an Interim Design Award is available where a Client & Design Award is integrated into the process en route to a Whole Team Award.

Four part-team Awards are available for projects where not all project partners can take part or where individual members of the team would like to have their own role assessed and recognised separately:

  • Client & Design Award – for a joint application by the client and designer
  • Design Award – for principal designer(s) only
  • Design & Construction Award – for a joint application by the contractor and their designer
  • Construction Award – for principal contractor(s) only.

In addition to these Awards for overall performance, we have also run Outstanding Achievement Awards in 2011 and 2013, to recognise and acknowledge projects and contracts that have demonstrated pinnacle best-practice performance in one of the sections of the question set – click here for details.

What level of achievement merits a CEEQUAL Award?

CEEQUAL assesses the extent to which the project or contract has exceeded the statutory and regulatory minima. It is not possible to achieve a 100% score due to conflicting environmental or social issues in the assessment. The Award thresholds, based on the maximum possible score for the work, as scoped by the Assessor and Verifier, are:

  • more than 25% - Pass
  • more than 40% - Good
  • more than 60% - Very Good
  • more than 75% - Excellent (with the actual score being given on the Award Certificate)
For Term Contracts, the scores until the final year are given only as a percentage.

The different levels of Awards should not be seen as inferior to each other when comparing a ‘Pass’ to an ‘Excellent’, for example, as they are both beyond the legal minimum of environmental and social performance in the industry. Also some levels of achievement may be unreachable with certain types of projects.

How much will a verified CEEQUAL Assessment and Award cost?

The fees vary depending on the CEEQUAL Scheme, civil engineering value and type of project applied for (in the case of CEEQUAL for Projects schemes). Click here to view CEEQUAL feescales.

"We are really pleased to receive an 'Excellent' award for sustainability considering the many engineering and environmental challenges involved with our project. Finding innovative solutions to these challenges has provided huge environmental benefits as well as proving to be cost effective."
John Trounson, Senior Project Manager (National Grid)

"Devon County Council made specific reference to CEEQUAL in its brief, as excellence in environmental management is on of its key objectives. We are delighted with this award for the Exeter Science Park, as it shows that everyone's high expectations have been met."
-Tim Obee, Project Manager
